LSO In Wartime: Create an Opera in a Day
Part of LSO Discovery LSO St Luke's
Sat 01 Nov 10am-4pm
There are secrets inside LSO St Luke’s … can you uncover the clues and help us create a brand new opera? It’s 1914 and some London Symphony Orchestra musicians are about to embark on an extraordinary journey. Help recreate their experiences and find out what happened when they went from performers in the concert hall to soldiers on the battlefield. The London Symphony Orchestra was just ten years old when war broke out across Europe. Were audiences still in the mood to go to concerts? What became of foreign musicians in the Orchestra? And what happened when trumpets and horns went from brass players to top brass?Award-winning composers Rachel Leach and Tim Yealland are on a music-making mission – and they need recruits! Kids, Mum, Dad, Granny – everyone is invited to get to grips with well-known war songs, and create new music inspired by wartime tales.Meanwhile, LSO Principal Flute Gareth Davies, and archive expert, will run a musical storytelling workshop. Gareth, helped by his colleagues in the Orchestra, will reveal the latest stories to have emerged from the LSO annals – expect some very tall tales indeed…In our third workshop, it’s time to get hands-on and make World War I-themed props and accessories to use in the final performance, where we’ll come together and sing our brand new opera.

This event is great for families because with just 100 places available, this is a special chance to get closer to the world-famous London Symphony Orchestra and learn about a key point in history through the medium of music.
